The Lost Art of Medical Dictation

While we’re not suggesting that medical dictation is comparable to the fictional dictation of great writers, author Amy Rowland makes some interesting points about the difference between a person or a machine transcribing a dictation.

In our years in business, only one physician has asked for ‘verbatim’ transcription.  Which is what you get if you use voice recognition software.  All others have requested that we make changes that improve the grammar, sentence structure, and highlight or even correct some mistakes in dictation (e.g. change in gender, or an incorrect year in a date).   For these, and other reasons, most physicians still prefer using a medical transcriptionist, instead of ‘machines’.
